Geodesic painting is a series of performative paintings and films I created at the Media Lab at MIT during one year research in Art Design and Public Domain at Harvard University. Each painting measures 45.5x45.5x3.5cm. My paintings use the forces of nature as paint brush, thus eliminating the subjectivity of the artist form the creative process.

My research on color, the most persistent quality in nature, follows a rigorous analytical color mixing protocol inspired by SMPTE color bars. Contemporary screen engineers use these mathematical chromatic guidelines to assure faithful reproduction of luminance and chrominance in digital screens. Luminance corresponds to the level of brightness, Chrominance to hue and saturation. This is what Leonardo da Vinci called chiaroscuro and what Albert Henry Munsell called the tridimensionality of color.

Color in its liquid is mixed by hand following a mathematical formula to assure gradual gain of Luminance and Chrominance. Each layer of color is compressed into 30 reciprocating chambers and loaded to a metallic painting mechanism hung on the wall. A white canvas is installed a few centimeters below. The act of painting is mechanically generated by intense linear pressure applied to the system of chambers, which allows the controlled release of color.

The result is a series of 104 straight lines created in space time by the force of gravity. Each colored line becomes the geometric representation of the shortest path between the canvas and the center of earth, the visual embodiment of geodesic paths created by free-falling paint. The effect of gravitation and the inertial of the white canvas act upon the aerodynamic motion of the liquid color, making reference to Albert Einstein’s general principle of relativity and to the octave of Isaac Newton.

A film captures the brush stroke of the universal laws of nature in real time and abandons the spectators to follow the flow of color from point zero to the surface of visible reality.

My paintings are a response to today’s gentrification towards under-regulated digital screens as alternative platforms of reality right at the heart both mass digital Disinformation and a global health crisis. We seem to be at a period of transition towards the intangibilization of culture creation as human contact is primarily modulated by privatized screens. According to Marshall Mc Luhan “whoever controls the media, controls the people”. Therefore, whoever controls our screen devices, controls our future.
